Annual Competitions Planning

Among our cyclone recovery and changes in venue landscape this year we have been working on an annual plan for basketball competitions going forward, this has been interrupted and has not gone to plan this year thus far, however, our annual planning is coming together.

Over the last three years with Covid-19 and stadium damage causing us to change and try a variety of competitions and competition formats we have learnt a lot about what is best for our community and thank everyone who has given us feedback and suggestions over the last three years. This has all been taken into account for our plan moving forward into what we hope is a time free of global pandemics, natural disasters and court shortages.

There is a window of two weeks (ending June 25th) where I invite you to give any feedback on this new annual plan via email to sasha@hawkesbay.basketball

Term 4

Year 7&8; 3x3 games

Year 3&4; 3-aside modified games as per normal

Year 5&6; 5v5 games

Year 7&8; 5v5 games

8 weeks duration

Year 3&4: 5v5 games

Year 5&6: 5v5 games

Year 7&8: 5v5 games

This competition will start early September going for a longer than normal duration likely finishing late November (approx. 10-12 weeks)

Year 1&2: Skill Development Sessions

This will run for Term 4 only – it will not start in term 3 alongside competitions.

With the gap in offerings for the first half of Term 3 we will look to run a 6 week skill development opportunity for year 5-8 students at the start of Term 3 until the Term 3&4 competitions start. STAY TUNED for more info around this.

Secondary School;

Secondary School  basketball will potentially see some day changes based on the booking operations form PGA however outside of this will remain unchanged for the winter competition.

In addition to the Secondary School space the 3x3 Saturdays in Term 1 that have bene offered in the past will look to be made into a weekly competition for a small approx. 6 week period in Term 1.

Wairoa;

Year 1-8 Competitions will remain as per normal on Fridays during Term 2 and Term 3.

Central Hawkes Bay; Apologies for the lack of communication around the plan moving forward following the Hui earlier in the year.

Competitions will move FROM Term 2 and Term ¾ à TO Term 1 and Term ¾  and the year 1&2 age group will move from doing formalised competition games to skill development sessions instead.

The main reason behind this shift is to have basketball on at a different time to the other major winter sports to alleviate the pressure on resources, parents, teachers, volunteers, referees and children. Basketball is growing at an exceptional rate with resources struggling to keep up to demand so this shift will help basketball run effectively while we build resources and infrastructure for basketball which unfortunately will long process.

Entry and competition information will be sent at the start of Term 3 for an approximately 8th September start for 2023
